Runs through Zapier → Darwin + Mailchimp Open API settings ↗
When a visitor leaves their name and email in Darwin’s chat, Zapier adds them to your Mailchimp audience, or updates them if they’re already there, tagged so you know they came from the chat.
This connection runs through Zapier: Darwin’s Zapier app starts the Zap and Zapier’s Mailchimp app does the work in Mailchimp. You choose the fields. This recipe is a two-step Zap, which Zapier’s free plan includes.

Before you start

  • A Mailchimp account on any plan, including free.
  • Consent to email the person. Leaving an email in a chat isn’t consent to marketing, so use double opt-in or ask in the chat.
  • Darwin added to your Zapier account and a Darwin key for Zapier. Connect Zapier covers both in two minutes.

Add new leads to an audience

1

Choose the Darwin trigger

In Zapier, create a Zap. For the trigger, choose Darwin and the event New Lead. Connect your Darwin account with the key, then select Test trigger to load a sample.
2

Add the Mailchimp action

Choose Mailchimp as the action app and the event Add/Update Subscriber, connect Mailchimp, and pick your audience.
3

Map the fields

Darwin’s lead carries Email, First name, Last name, Company and Phone when the visitor gave them, plus Page URL, Traffic source, the UTM values, Darwin’s grade and Darwin url, a link to the conversation. Map:
4

Test and publish

Test the action, check the result in Mailchimp, then publish the Zap. The person appears in your audience as pending until they confirm.

Also useful

Use a separate Zap on Meeting Booked to tag people who booked, so your emails can treat them differently from people who only asked a question.

Good to know

  • Tags are the easiest way to start a Mailchimp journey for chat leads.
  • The Zap acts on leads from the moment you turn it on.
Darwin is in private beta on Zapier. Open the invite link in Connect Zapier while signed in to the Zapier account you build Zaps in.
No. It runs through Zapier: Darwin’s Zapier app starts the Zap and Zapier’s Mailchimp app adds the subscriber. You choose the audience, tags and fields.
Preview conversations never start a Zap, so testing your agent doesn’t fill your tools. Chat on your live website to test end to end, or use the samples from Test trigger.
