# Send leads to Mailchimp

> Add every lead from Darwin's website chat to a Mailchimp audience with a tag, through Zapier and without code.

<div className="darwin-location"><strong>Runs through</strong> Zapier → Darwin + Mailchimp <a href="https://app.meetdarwin.ai/admin/settings/api">Open API settings ↗</a></div>

When a visitor leaves their name and email in Darwin's chat, Zapier adds them to your Mailchimp audience, or updates them if they're already there, tagged so you know they came from the chat.

<Note>
  This connection runs through Zapier: Darwin's Zapier app starts the Zap and Zapier's Mailchimp app does the work in Mailchimp. You choose the fields. This recipe is a two-step Zap, which Zapier's free plan includes.
</Note>

## Before you start

* A Mailchimp account on any plan, including free.
* Consent to email the person. Leaving an email in a chat isn't consent to marketing, so use double opt-in or ask in the chat.
* Darwin added to your Zapier account and a Darwin key for Zapier. [Connect Zapier](/integrations/zapier) covers both in two minutes.

## Add new leads to an audience

<Steps>
  <Step title="Choose the Darwin trigger">
    In Zapier, create a Zap. For the trigger, choose **Darwin** and the event **New Lead**. Connect your Darwin account with the key, then select **Test trigger** to load a sample.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add the Mailchimp action">
    Choose **Mailchimp** as the action app and the event **Add/Update Subscriber**, connect Mailchimp, and pick your audience.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Map the fields">
    Darwin's lead carries **Email**, **First name**, **Last name**, **Company** and **Phone** when the visitor gave them, plus **Page URL**, **Traffic source**, the UTM values, Darwin's grade and **Darwin url**, a link to the conversation. Map:

    | Mailchimp field | Darwin field |
    | - | - |
    | Subscriber Email | Email |
    | First Name | First name |
    | Last Name | Last name |
    | Tag(s) | Type `Darwin chat` |
    | Double Opt-In | Yes, so Mailchimp asks the person to confirm |
  </Step>

  <Step title="Test and publish">
    Test the action, check the result in Mailchimp, then publish the Zap. The person appears in your audience as pending until they confirm.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Also useful

Use a separate Zap on **Meeting Booked** to tag people who booked, so your emails can treat them differently from people who only asked a question.

## Good to know

* Tags are the easiest way to start a Mailchimp journey for chat leads.
* The Zap acts on leads from the moment you turn it on.
