# Let Darwin prepare your assistant

> Have a conversation with Darwin to prepare your knowledge, voice, and chat design.

Choose **Finish your setup** in the sidebar, **Continue setup** on Overview, or **Guided setup** in Workspace settings. Darwin opens in a chat lightbox above your current page. You can close it and continue working without losing your place in the app.

Darwin introduces itself and asks for your website and scheduling link. The goal is a setup in about two minutes; website speed and the changes you make can affect that time.

  <Step title="Send your website">
    Enter your public website address and select the up-arrow **Send website** button. Your workspace name is already filled in; expand **Workspace name** to change it.

    Darwin finds your sitemap and homepage links, chooses useful product, pricing, and buying-question pages, then reads up to 12 pages for the first draft. The conversation shows the current research activity as it happens.

    This does not install a widget or make your assistant public.

  <Step title="Meet your assistant">
    Darwin sends an opening-message preview using the suggested brand colors. Select **View or edit the details** to inspect the business knowledge, voice, behavior, selected pages, and colors. Failed pages are excluded. Suggestions and unanswered questions are available inside the details.

    You can also describe a change in plain English: “We help small sales teams. Keep the opening friendly and skip the jargon.” Send it with the up-arrow **Send changes to Darwin** button. Darwin revises the draft and explains the change in the conversation. **Undo this change** restores the previous draft while no later edits have been made.

    Select **Looks good** to save the draft, import the selected sources, and continue. Send or clear any pending edit request first. Assisted editing allows 10 requests per workspace in 24 hours; the direct editors remain available.

  <Step title="Add your scheduling link">
    Darwin asks where to send visitors who want to meet your team. Paste your existing public scheduling URL and select **Let’s try my assistant**.

    Saving a link does not authenticate a calendar account or verify a real booking. See [Scheduling](/assistant/scheduling) for those limits.

  <Step title="Try a conversation and finish">
    The private test chat opens automatically inside the conversation. Ask a customer question. Darwin detects the saved reply and enables **Finish setup** automatically.

    **Finish setup** saves your progress. When live activation is available and installation is verified, the button reads **Activate on my website** instead and explains that visitors will see the assistant. Otherwise, the widget stays private.

    When setup is complete, select **Let’s go** to close the lightbox and return to your workspace.

## Close and come back

Use the close button or press **Escape** to return to the page underneath. Reopening setup within the app keeps your draft edits and conversation. Completed research stages and saved settings also survive a page reload; choose **Looks good** to save draft edits before refreshing or leaving the app.

Research pauses between stages while the lightbox is closed and resumes when reopened. **Try again** continues after a failed step. **Prepare a new draft** is available after applying a draft. Up to five new drafts can be started per workspace in 24 hours.

Changing assistant settings or source material may require a fresh preview conversation before finishing. Saving an unchanged scheduling link does not restart your test.

## If automatic preparation needs help

If automatic writing is unavailable, Darwin labels the result as a starter draft for you to check. A failed assisted edit leaves the existing draft unchanged.

If research fails, choose **Add my business details instead** to enter your context directly. You can import more pages later in **Settings → Knowledge**. If another administrator changes the assistant or design before you save, Darwin prevents the stale draft from overwriting their changes.

## What website research includes

* The first pass stays on your website and its `www` alias. Add a separate documentation domain later in **Settings → Knowledge**.
* Public HTML pages work best. Login-only content and JavaScript-only pages may need manual business context.
* Colors, fonts, and brand images are suggestions. You can refine the design in **Settings → Appearance**.
* Imported content is immediately available for keyword search. **Update search index** in Knowledge adds semantic coverage when available.
* The initial 12-page research limit is separate from your plan's optimized-page allowance.
